How To Become A Better Soccer Coach - 5 Essential Skills That Our Players Need To Succeed.

You Know All The Drills, You Have a Team Of Physically and Technically Capable Players....So How Come They Don't Perform On Match Day?

Dear Soccer Coach,

You're not alone!
This a burning question that soccer coaches from all around the globe ask themselves. You know that your players are physically and technically capable, so why do they 'choke' on match day? Your players train hard, they do as you ask of them (mostly!), they look capable and you feel they are well prepared, but when it comes to crossing that white line on a Saturday or Sunday, they look like scared little sheep who have just thrown out every bit of great advice you've taught them. BUT WHY?

If you'll allow me, I would like to tell you the main reasons why our players don't perform when they are asked to. And more importantly I'd like to tell you how you can start helping them perform to the best of their abilities.

First I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Imtiaz Jamil and I've been active in Youth Soccer Development since 1995. I now run a company called The Targetizer, which has developed a simple target training device for youth football training. You can click on the link if you'd like to take a look at it.

”...I am a footballer trying to become a professional. I have just come off a trial at a professional club.

Throughout my many years experience i have witnessed coaches who have taught pointless exercises, that i believe do a terrible injustice to ambitious footballers!

I think your advice is excellent, informative, and empowering. Where have you been all my life. Lol

I'm joking, but keep up the good work, footballers need more people that care, plus have specialised knowledge!”

Back to the reason why you're here. To learn the essential skills that will help your players perform on match day.
Firstly, what are those skills?

As the statement in the headline above suggests - Soccer is 10% Physical and 90% Mental - the skills, or lack of them, that are stopping your players from performing to their fullest are all in their heads - literally.

The essential skills that Pro Coaches and Managers demand from their players are of course, good physical, technical and tactical ability but more importantly they want to see that players know how to control the mental stresses that Soccer will inevitably throw their way. They want to see:

  • Confidence
  • A Good Mental Attitude
  • Emotional Control & Self Control
  • Self Belief
  • Positive Attitude
  • Character
  • Trust In Their Own Ability

It is those skills above that our players must possess to be able to perform to their full potential and not choke when they're up against it.

And it's a fantastic part of your role to provide them with these powerful mental skills you are about to learn that will help them succeed on match day.

Hi there ! Many thanks for your email! Again I have taken your advice to training and your main topic which has worked for me is the positive attitude, putting a positive attitude towards a team means that first and foremost you have to have a positive attitude yourself.

I personally think that being positive to children ie u 10s will draw there attention and they become very responsive to a coaches positive attitude.

In the past i have really had to make training fun to hold there attention and keep things moving, now i am rewarding the same children by seeing there positive attitude and learning.

The following short Program will give you a great vantage point for learning these basic and advanced techniques used to get the best out of players.

Our roles as Coaches has changed dramatically over the past 10 years. It's no longer a 'tell and do' role - where we tell the players 'what to do' and they 'do it'. Players attitudes and social influences are much broader than ever before. As Coaches, we have to embrace what makes our players tick and help them through any issues they are facing - whether it's to do with Soccer or not.

If we are unable to communicate openly with our players then how can we possibly know what is stopping them from playing? How do we know what they want - their aspirations and dreams. What issues they are suffering from at home, school, college, work, from team mates, from family, from friends ....possibly even from us as their Coach.

We have to remember that players from all age groups are far more savvy and have access to far more information than ever before. We must be able to communicate with them to overcome any hurdles and help them concentrate on the reason why they're in your team - to play soccer to the best of their ability and have a great time being part of that team.

And that's another great part of our role as modern Coaches. To give our players the best possible chance, to help them improve, to help them succeed, because there is no better feeling than helping someone achieve their goals and dreams. Adding great value to your players lives is a very rewarding experience. That's why once you start Coaching, it's very difficult to stop.

Thank you for all the tips that you have given me!!!

I really appreciate them i am now starting to practice them bit by bit in a match situation and i can see slight improvement from before i took the tips and i think these improvements will increase so thanks once again for everything!!
