How Manchester United Develop Goal Scorers

I'm not sure if you've ever had the opportunity of visiting the Cliff Training Ground? It's Manchester United's old training ground. Where 'academy' greats like Beckham, Giggs, Scholes amongst many others, were nurtured and developed to play at the highest level. For club and country and in the theatre of dreams.

As you walk into the indoor training complex and you look to your right you'll see a full sized goal painted on the wall - just the outline of it.

And guess what is painted in the 4 corners of that goal?

Low and behold.... 4 spots - one in each corner - about the size of a ball.

Now, we're talking about one of the world's biggest clubs, who spend millions on player development. Even they use some kind of visual target goal to help players develop the all inportant skill and knowledge of goal scoring.

Just in case you don't know, coaches encourage goal scorers to practice aiming for the corners of the goal because these are the areas a goal keeper is less likely to save your shot in.

And They're Not The Only Ones

If you're a supporter of United's great rivals, Liverpool, you may know about this story too....

You've probably heard of their legendary manager Bill Shankly.... He's the man that took Liverpool from being a no-hope second devision club to the world renowned force they are now. He was a very straight forward, to-the-point kind of man and took no prisoners.

Shankly famously used innovative training methods to help his players reach peak performance in the days when going out the night before a match was acceptable - not under his watch though!

One of his most infamous training tools was the 'sweatbox'. It was loved and loathed by the players at Liverpool and I'll explain why....

However, before I do it's important to note this simple target training method was so successful that it produced a legendary goal scorer who's record as the Liverpools all time top league goal scorer still stands unbeaten to this day. That players name is Roger Hunt.

The picture shows Kevin Keagan using the sweatbox and this is how his players became sharp, top goal scorers.... Bill Shankly used to stand the striker in the middle of four 12 foot by 6 foot sheets of wood.

Each sheet of wood had squares with numbers painted on them, again in each corner.

Feeder players - that's players stood in the gaps feeding the ball into the center player - would play the ball on Bill's command into the center player. Bill would then shout a number that he wanted the center player to aim for.

As Bill famously said "I start them off slow and finish them off fast." What he meant was he would get the balls played in at a normal pace first then increase the speed and ferosity of the feeder balls.

The balls would eventually be flying in from all kinds of angles and heights. Meaning that the center player would need to control the ball and then find the right target and aim.

Players were only in the sweatbox for 2 minutes but it was the most intense training they ever encountered. Many new recruits were often put through their paces on their first day to the amusement of the long-timers.

The new guys just didn't know what hit them!

Players loathed the hard training but they loved the end result of being able to handle any goal scoring situation they found themselves in on match day.
